Inspiration - Trinity College Library
The inspiration for this project was grandiose, the library at Trinity College in Scotland. Our client worked on his PhD in the 18th century library. The challenge was to incorporate the feel and magnificence of the library into a modest cottage in McMinnville, OR. The space we transformed is only 264 sq ft with 8′ ceilings! We started by removing a window that had neither a view nor added natural light. This wall became the main wall for books. The opposite wall features Corinthian columns, an arched opening from the library to the living room and an entry built-in complete with a charging station for all their electronics! For furnishings, we had to accommodate both partners; he is 6’4″ and she is 5’1″. Custom furniture was designed to incorporate the client’s love of color (burgundy sofa, teal green ottoman, orange walls, and the new “antique” chair which brought all the colors together). The layout of the space works well for both of them to watch TV comfortably.
Located behind the sofa is a library table for use as a writing/research desk. The dark finish replicates the use of tallow candles, which would result in the finish being darker near the ceiling. We incorporated custom-manufactured Volute scrolls, reused antiqued leaded glass doors in the media center, imported custom metal-grid work from England and Edgar Berebi Decorative Hardware.
The powder room was transformed into a Moroccan water closet with tile from Pratt and Larson. The tiny Lacava Marietta sink (15” x 8 ¾” deep) and Brizo wall faucet sits on top of a curved walnut shelf which was created to increase access into the compact room.
